The benefits of turmeric are numerous. Turmeric is an herb with very large leaves that is cultivated primarily in India. It is frequently used as a spice in Indian cooking, but also offers many health benefits.

The spicy part of the large-leafed turmeric plant is actually in the underground stems, which are called rhizomes. This part of the stem can be cultivated and used in cooking or as an herbal supplement. The benefits of turmeric have been known since ancient times. It is a common remedy in Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine as well as in traditional Chinese medicine. In fact, a study out of Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago suggests that diets containing significant amounts of turmeric are associated with lower rates of childhood leukemia. The spice seems to prevent leukemia cells from dividing and it also appears to protect the body from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke and the intake of certain kinds of processed foods.

Because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric benefits the skin in several ways and is also an excellent home remedy for coughs and colds. A paste made from turmeric can be used to treat skin inflammation and protect the skin from damage at the cellular level.

Skin care products made with turmeric are also known to enhance beauty in general by giving the skin a healthy glow. For coughs and colds, drinking hot milk with a pinch of turmeric mixed in can help to break up congestion and ease symptoms. This paste can also be applied to the nose or forehead to help alleviate cold symptoms.

While turmeric is generally safe and has no known side-effects it is very spicy and, when consumed in excess, may cause some stomach upset. People with gallstones or bile passage obstruction should consult a physician before using turmeric therapeutically. Also, the spice is not recommended for pregnant women or women who are breast feeding as it may cause uterine contractions
